Variable speed drives (VSDs) can also be known as adjustable speed drives or variable frequency drives. They are large industrial pieces of equipment used to regulate the speed and torque output of electric motors.

Their main purpose of VSDs is to reduce the amount of energy and electricity consumption, which they can do without changing motor speed. They can help save energy in plants that use powerful electric motors, as well as operating other areas such as sewage and irrigation pumps, paper machines, sawmill conveyors and hospital ventilation systems.
Drives are available in various different sizes to suit the size of the motors they are regulating. They are also known by several other names including adjustable speed drives, variable frequency drives, AC drives and inverter drives. Since being introduced to the market, they have overtaken DC motors and controllers to become the most popular and cost-effective motor control system.
The history of Industria Lombarda Materiale Elettrico SpA (ILME) dates back to 1938 in Milan, Italy, when work in the electrotechnical sector to manufacture equipment for industrial installations began. Seven years later, the company was established in 1945.
Over the following decades, ILME continued to develop as a business and create innovative new products. In 1962, they changed their focus from creating products out of cast iron, to use die cast aluminium. The following decade saw the release of ILME’s IB range of interlocked socket outlets in 1975, while in 1982 they created the Z range of compact switches. The innovation continued with the addition of the BK flat interlocked socket outlets in 1986 and the CLASS levers in 1990.
Moving into the 21st century, ILME launched the MIXO modular connections in 2001, the TM heavy duty socket outlets in 2002, and the V-TYPE innovative lever system in 2005. In 2006, JEI was launched as a “standard” alternative, while CQ 12 motor control was created in 2007, T-TYPE adequate materials in 2008, SQUICH connection without tools in 2009 and both CDS high density contacts and IB6 in 2012. 2014 saw the launch of IL-BRID materials, 2015 the SIMPLEX enclosures with self-closing covers, CDSH high density SQUICH connection in 2016 and E-XTRREME corrosion proof metal enclosures in 2017.
Over the years, ILME has expanded its operations from Milan to a global set up, opening in key automation countries such as Germany and Japan, and also opening subsidiaries in France, United Kingdom, China and Sweden.
Today, ILME continues to operate across the world with its headquarters in Milan, focused on meeting the promises made in the company’s official mission statement:

ILME specialises in a number of products. One set of products manufactured by the Italian automation company is connectors. The range of connectors includes connector inserts, for screw, spring and crimp connections, for up to 10A, 16A, 35A, 40A, 100A and 200A. This range of connectors is compatible with 10A screw, spring and crimp connections, the 16A SQUICH connection without tools, the 16A screw, spring and crimp connections, the 35A CP series, the 40A CQ series, the 100A CX series and the 5A-200A MIXO series, including RJ45, D-SUB, USB, BUS, COAX and Pneumatic.
ILME also manufactures connector enclosures. This range includes standard application enclosures, watertight IP67 & IP68 enclosures, enclosures for aggressive environments, the HYGIENIC series of enclosures made applications in the food & beverage sector, enclosures for special uses (including BIG Hood, EMC, 180C, and light and sound application), as well as offering panel support and special enclosures.
They also produce accessories, tools and load curves for multipole connectors.
Another specialisation from ILME is installation technology, with several ranges of plugs and sockets for industrial use manufactured and sold. The TM Series offers a mechanical resistance of IK10 and an IP66/IP67 degree of protection, in 16, 32, 63 and 125A models. The TM PI series comes in a robustly constructed insulating enclosure, for both 16A and 32A. The third of the TM range is the TM Ex Series, installed via a wall mount, with bottom plug entry and 16A, 32A and 63A models.
The IB6 Series offers an IP66 degree of protection and a mechanical resistance of IK10, coming with an insulating enclosure and single wall mount installation. The PB5 series is made of die-cast aluminium alloy, with an IP55 degree of protection. The SQV/FM series has a mechanical resistance of 6 J, with a wall or flush mount installation on models for either 16A or 32A. The BK Series offers IP66 and IP67 degree of protection, in an UL 94V-0 insulating enclosure, in 16A, 32A, 63A. Finally, the QC/QM Series offers IP65 and IP55 degree of protection, a mechanical resistance of IK08, and 16, 32 and 63A Schuko models.
The range of plugs includes wall-mounting, flush-mounting, and angled plugs for low voltage over 50V up to 690V. ILME also make socket-outlets and couplers, also for 50 to 690V. Phase inverters are also manufactured, for low voltage of over 200V up to 415V. There are also plugs, couplers, straight flush-mounting sockets and inclined flush-mounting sockets for LS-Type connections for entertainment.
ILME also produce couplers for plugs, and flush-mounting sockets, as well as extra low voltage to 50V wall-mounting and flush-mounting sockets, couplers, flush-mounting sockets with microswitches, plugs and wall-mounting plugs. They also manufacture socket outlets with safety transformers.
